The book is a collection of lectures that for half a century I read at the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosova outstanding lecturer, one of the best representatives of Russian philological science Ninel Ivanovna Vannikova (1931–2017) Two sections correspond to two courses that she read: Western European literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and Western European literature of the XVII - XVIII centuries. The publication was based on the decoding of audio recordings, lecture notes, as well as some handwritten and typewritten records made by the lecturer himself.
