How and why does the landscape acquire certain properties, qualities in the eyes of people? What encourages us to endow with a secret meaning, read as sacred rivers or mountains, trees or stones? The answer to this question lies in the features of human thinking, in our perception of all things. When the environment is seen by a reflection of the Divine World, it becomes something big, and geography itself, i.e. “Description of the Earth,” is sacred. The author considers some patterns of this process as a phenomenon of culture, using mainly Eastern European materials, but referring to parallels from other regions of Eurasia
