The scientific discussion of Russian realism, compromised by Soviet literary criticism, was interrupted in the post -Soviet era. As a result, the modernization of the scientific language and the adaptation of new academic trends did not affect the history of Russian literature of the XIX century.
The authors of the collection compiled in the wake of three international conferences are trying to answer the questions: how can you study realism today? How did Russian genre models differ from Western European? How did science and political economy affect the prose of Russian classics? Why, with all the radicality of views on the “female question”, the role of women writers in the development of Russian realism remained very limited?
Resuming a discussion about Russian realism as the most important "modeling system" of a certain stage of modernity, the authors consider it through the prism of the social imaginary, economy, epistemology of the XIX century and the theory of Mimesis, thereby offering the reader a wide range of modern scientific approaches to the problem
