This publication is based on a unique book of the brilliant expert on Russian art of Baron Nikolai Nikolayevich Wrangel (1880-1915), whose name in the Soviet period was forgotten for well-known reasons. His work introduces readers with the history of the creation of the first museum of national fine art in Russia - the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III (since 1917 - the State Russian Museum), as well as its masterpieces - the famous canvases of Bryullov, Aivazovsky, Shishkin, Surikov, Repin and other great ones painters.
The documentary material collected by Nikolai Wrangel is vast: excerpts from newspapers and magazines, monographs, catalogs, archival documents, as well as interesting information about the paintings provided by the artists themselves. Introductory articles introduce the history of the Mikhailovsky Palace, in which the Russian Museum is located, and its creator - the great architect Karl Ivanovich Rossi.
