This book is about the role of writers of Russian Montparnasas in the formation of aesthetics, style and code of transnational modernism of the 1920-1930s. Monparnas is considered here not only as a sign of the French capital, but, first of all, as a metaphor for "post -apocalyptic" European literature, which arose from the experience of the First World War, revolutionary upheavals and mass migrations. The work of young authors of the Russian diaspora, as well as Western writers of the lost generation ", was a response to aesthetic, philosophical and existential crisis that has gripped the Western civilization of entropy, the spread of totalitarian discourses, the cinema of mass culture, the new social practices of the modern metropolis. Having traumated exile, marginality and alienation into a source of inspiration, they created hybrid prose in the transition zone between different national traditions, canons and languages. Cleaning the dialogue of their works and key Western intertexts, Maria Rubins reveals the aesthetic and conceptual parallels between the work of Gazdanov and Hesse, Nemirovsky and Moran, G. Ivanov and Eliot, Odoevtseva and Koctoen, Sharshun and Breton, Yanovsky and G. Miller. Bakunina and Lawrence, as well as between the techniques of Ar-Deco in literature and painting, photographs of Brassai and the "Parisian text" of Russian emigrants, directorial strategies of Lernbier and the poetics of Gazdanov. The Russian Monparnas, thus, appears as a full -fledged participant in the pan -European literary process of interwar decades, which has largely anticipated later tendencies to the diaspractorization and globalization of culture
