In the book of Jane T. Kholou, countless paradigms are represented, in which forests appear in Russian culture of the 19th century. Associated with national identity and religious traditions, peasant ways of life and generations of rebels hidden there, Russian forests in the 19th century became the object of growing scientific interest and environmental care, when landowners, agronomists and state officials finally realized how these cults were predatoryly cut down the woods. In the work of Khlow, the points of intersection of scientific thought and artistic imagination, the design of the identity and the formulation of environmental ethics are investigated. Separate chapters are devoted to the work of Turgenev, Melnikov-Pechersky, Korolenko and Nesterov, not by ignoring the entire rich range of figures from Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Repin to the natural scientist Dmitry Kaygorodov and foresters of the St. Petersburg Forest Academy.
