The novel by A.K. Tolstoy tells about the radical fracture in Russian history in the XVI century. In the center of the story, the image of Ivan the Terrible - a despotistical, cruel, treacherous king.
The author introduces readers with numerous representatives of the Russian people: princes, boyars, peasants, warriors, songwriters, robbers. There are many historical personalities in the novel: the boyar Godunov, the princes are the father and son of the Basmanovs, Vyazemsky, the dirty, as well as the cruel executioner Malyuta Skuratov.
They are opposed by the bright images of Prince Serebryany and the boyar Morozov - patriots, warriors, smart and honest people.
