Vladimir Maksimovich Frice (1870–1929) - writer, literary critic and art critic - explores the world of terrible nightmares and madness. First of all, through the prism of works of art and literature from the era of the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the twentieth century. Every century has his own demon and his horror, Friche calls them and talks about how once again “over the world over which the sun of carefree joy went out, again reigned with the horns crowned flowers, the prince of darkness.” The author does not dwell in detail on individual personalities of a particular era, and this helps to see all the inhabitants of certain generations and their fears
