Gogol “Dead Souls” and the Criminal Law of the Russian Empire of the 19th century is the third in a series of popular science works dedicated to the history of Russian and Soviet legislation. The author explores the main literary work of the brilliant writer - the poem “Dead Souls” - on the basis of Russian laws and regulatory acts, including decisions of the Governmental Senate as a cassation instance in various resonant matters. Legal analysis of the poem also concerns the issues of anti -corruption legislation, the provisions of serfs in the general structure of the Russian state, the responsibility of the landowners for exceeding the authorities, the procedure for the adoption of estates in the guardianship, etc. As an application to the text of the book, there are separate chapters of the Code of Criminal and Correctional in the correctional and correctional editors of 1845
