In the already classical study of Professor Yale University of Katerina Clark, a long and contradictory history of the formation of Soviet culture is revealed. The origins of the dramatic fights of the era of the cultural revolution (late 1910s and early 1930s) are found in pre-revolutionary history, leaving root into various aesthetic programs of radical transformation of life. The desire of the state to subjugate the sphere of culture to its interests is found with attempts by various art and academic groups to use the state in the fight against competitors. The values of the classical culture are faced with the tastes of the masses, utopian projects - with the products of the commercial industry, "Old Petersburg" - with "New Moscow". Socialist realism is born from this counterpoint, which is convincingly described in this book
