The book presents the first complete study of the widely used, but poorly understood the term "pastesh" and its use. Richard Dyer claims that although this term is applicable to works containing collage, it can also be used to describe works that deliberately simulate previous works. With examples of classical literary pastys of Proust and texts in the text (a play in the play in Hamlet, a show inside the show in the musical of "madness ”) the author considers the use of the term“ pastes ”to describe imitations calculated to be understood and recognized precisely as it is precisely as imitation. Further, the author analyzes the relationship of the pastes with the genre, criticism and emotions and analyzes in detail a wide range of examples - "Madame Bovari", "Nutcracker", "African American Symphony", Spaghetti Testerns ("Once in the Wild West"), Neonuar and the film “Following” Raya".
Dyer advocates to recognize the value of the pastry as a practice that is contrary to some common places of critical discussion, showing that the work can be critical of something without turning into a parody, and can recognize the history of its emotional effect , continuing to affect our feelings.
The book is addressed to art critics, culturalists, filming, philosophers and all interested in various types of art
