Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809-1852) was born in the village of Veliki Sorochintsy of the Mirgorod district of the Poltava province, in the family of the landowner. In addition to him, there were still six children in the family. Gogol’s father, Vasily Afanasevich, had some literary gift - he wrote several comedies in Ukrainian. He died when Nikolai Gogol was 15 years old. Gogol’s mother was a sensual and religious woman, hence the religiosity of Gogol himself.
Nikolai Gogol graduated in 1828 by the gymnasium of higher sciences in Nezhin. The future writer dreams of a legal career, but, having entered the department, is disappointed. In 1829, he was taking the first steps in literature - he prints the poem "Hanz Kuchelgarten" under the name of V. Alov, but after mocking reviews he burns it. Following this, it publishes the story "The evening on the eve of Ivan Kupala", and then "Evenings on the Farm near Dikanka" and becomes famous. At this time, Gogol meets Pushkin, who tells him the plot of the "auditor". The premiere of the play took place in the spring of 1835 in Moscow, in the Maly Theater.
Gogol leaves for Germany, and then to Switzerland, where he takes on the writing of "dead souls". Abroad, he learns about the death of Pushkin, who prompted the plot of "dead souls", and perceives the writing of this novel as a testament of the poet with bitterness. After the first volume of the Dead Souls, Gogol again leaves for the border and takes on writing a second volume, but he has signs of a mental crisis. The writer returns to Moscow and, continuing to work on the novel, falls into depression and burns the manuscript. Only five chapters remained, which were published after the death of the writer.
Nikolai Gogol died in 1852 in Moscow, was buried in the Danilovsky monastery. In 1931, his ashes was transferred to the Novodevichy cemetery.
In addition to the mentioned works from Gogol’s pen, the Sorochinsky Fair, "Portrait", "Nose", "Notes of a madman", "Tale of how Ivan Ivanovich quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich" and others came out
