Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky (1823-1886) is an outstanding Russian playwright, his work formed the basis of the modern Russian theater.
His people-we count! (1849) - Comedy in four actions, the original name of the play “Bankrupt.”
The plot immerses the reader in the reality of a merchant family, whose head of which is the stingy and domineering merchant Smeson Bolshov. In order not to pay on the loan, the big goes to various tricks and fraud.
The setting of the play brought the author a stunning success, but soon “as an offensive for Russian merchants” was banned by Emperor Nikolai I. The comedy again took a worthy place on theatrical posters .
The book also included the plays “Marriage of Balzaminov” (the original name - “What will you go for, then you will find”) (1861) and “The guilty” (1883)
