In the 1920s, an unprecedented program of architectural and cultural renewal of the city was developed in Frankfurt-on-Maine. This concept went down in the history of culture called New Frankfurt. Under the leadership of the mayor of Ludwig Landmann and Architect Ernst May, the concept of modernity as a lifestyle was embodied here: more than 10,000 new residential units were designed as part of the housing construction and development program, adopted in 1925. Both local and invited architects developed innovative projects by order of the Ministry of Construction. They were engaged in the design of living spaces oriented to the family, sought to make housing accessible to people with low income, developed the technologies of prefabricated construction, they also owns the concept of standard kitchen. Among the priorities were the construction of educational institutions taking into account the needs of children, and complex city and landscape planning. This book contains four essays that will allow the reader to delve into the study of the cultural context of this large -scale program and penetrate the essence of the work of numerous specialists involved in its implementation.
