Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp - an outstanding domestic philologist, professor of Leningrad University. One of the founders of the structural and typological approach in folklorism, which later received widespread use in literary criticism. The works of V. Ya. Proppa on the study of folklore entered the golden fund of world science of the twentieth century.
In books dedicated to the magical fairy tale, V. Ya. Propp refuses traditional approaches to the study of the phenomena of oral folk art and first turns to the analysis of the structural elements of the genre, and then to its origins, establishing a typological similarity between the fairy tale and the rituals of initiation . As the scientist himself wrote, ““ morphology ”and "historical roots" are, as it were, two parts or two volumes of one great difficulty. The second directly follows from the first, the first is the premise of the second. <...> I, if possible, strictly methodically and consistently move from a scientific description of phenomena and facts to explaining their historical reasons. ” The book Russian Heroic Epos (1955) was the first and still the only fundamental study dedicated to epics. V. Ya. Propp undertook their plot-thematic and poetic analysis. This work of the scientist is a kind of reference book in the Russian epic - from the first epic hero of the Volkha Vseslavievich to the well -known Ilya Muromets, Dobryni, Vasily Buslaevich and others.
In many ways ahead of his time, the works of V. Ya. Proppa have become a classic of humanitarian research and have not yet lost their relevance
