American research universities invariably lead in international ratings, but their institutional model is increasingly behind the goals that are facing them today. To maintain social well -being and economic competitiveness, a new model is needed, which involves the widespread accessibility of quality education. Michael Crowe, taking in 2002 the post of president of the University of Arizona (ASU), proposed a new version of the State Research University. As a result of the fundamental conceptual update of ASU, it turned into a global educational and intellectual center - a visual prototype of the proposed model of a new American university. Its features are the highest academic quality combined with wide access to education for all segments of the population, as well as the maximum participation in society. In this book, Michael Crowe and education historian William Debars are considering the emergence of American research universities and discuss the need to update the model underlying them. Thanks to institutional innovations, they say, universities can form their unique identity, which will allow them to most realize their potential and create ideas, products and processes that change the quality of life and contribute to national economic stability.
