In the book on the material of Marxist literary criticism in Russia of the late XIX - early XX centuries. The ideological dynamics of Russian Marxism is traced. Based on the principle of self-identification of critics as supporters of the teachings of Marx, M.V. Mikhailov considers their literary and critical views, without separating the "faithful" from the "heretics", and demonstrates the lively development of the Marxist idea. The author separately dwells on free mutual criticism and unstressed discussions of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. At that time, the literary Marxism was a conglomerate of many -faced concepts, but after the proclamation of the Leninist principle of partisanship, this variety came to an end: from now on, Marxism obeyed the dogma and existed in an atmosphere of moral and political pressure. The author shows unrealized and ruined inclinations of Marxist literary criticism in the person of her talented representatives - M. Morozov, L. Trotsky, N. Alien and others
