Two plays of the German playwright Frank Vedikenda (1964-1918) under the general name "Lula" ("The Spirit of the Earth" and "Box of Pandora") are one of the recognized masterpieces of the literature of the European Art Nouveau. They brought to the stage the image of a "fatal woman", which brings to the death of all men falling in to her. These plays were published for the first time in Russian in 1908 in the translations of Sergey Gorodetsky (Prologue), Vsevolod Meyerhold ("The Spirit of the Earth") and Polina Guberman ("Box of Pandora") and subsequently used by Meyerhold for stage production. The preface by Anton Flerov describes the figures of Vedekind and Meyerhold due to the problems of the "Lulu" and allows you to more clearly outline the various meanings of a complex, multilayer work
