A few days ago, the book of Lolita was published in New York. The story of a girl from the cover. Roman Vladimir Nabokov in art and design. " The art album also has some features of a scientific monograph: it analyzes the whole half -century history of the novel and its illustrations.
The authors tried to imagine an objective independent look at the cover of Nabokov"s famous creation. From their point of view, the current visual representation of the "Lolita", which is firmly entrenched in mass culture, has little to do with the content of the novel, the main character of which is more likely to be sexual violence of a teenage girl than a nymph-member.
Nabokov himself, as you know, was sharply against the image of the girls on the covers of the "Lolita". In his opinion, the best cover for the novel would be a romantic landscape in pure light colors, with the road and clouds running into the distance, through which the rays of light break through. Nevertheless, the writer understood that the images of a nymphs helped sales, so he treated such covers condescendingly, perceiving them as an inevitable evil.
One of the album compilers, Yuri Leving, has been collecting Russian editions of Lolita for 20 years. According to him, some covers were so grotesque that it was impossible to pass by. Gradually, as the collection is filled, some trends could already be tracked in the design of the covers.
The idea to make an album where the views of different artists and designers on the design of the famous novel Nabokov would have been presented, came up with a friend of Yuri, American John Bertram, a great fan of Russian art. He announced a competition for the best design of the Cover "Lolita" with prizes for winners. As a result, at the disposal of Leving and Bertram, there were about two hundred works, of which 80 were selected for the album. In addition, the publication includes an analysis of the 50-year history of the novel and its visual representations
