The book considers the process of forming literature as a cultural institution in Western Europe in the 19th century and reveals the relationship of two, at first glance, distant from each other, the phenomena of cultural life: "centuries of the bourgeois" and "centuries of literature". In the focus of the study, the figure of the bourgeois reader, who turned out to be paradoxically involved in both the market -exchange and aesthetic practices of his time. Particular attention in the book is paid to the type of literary imagination cultivated in the bourgeois environment: it assumed the ability of an interested reader to participate in a literary experiment with a form, enter into a creative dialogue with the author and thus give rise to a kind of new sociality in the act of reading. The methods of sociological poetics are analyzed and in a new way interpret the texts of classical poets - W. Wordsworth, E. A. Po, Sh. Baudler, W. Whitman and novelists - O. de Balzac, G. Melville, Flaubert, J. Eliot - In which the ideal of free, public-accurate communication and egalitarian cooperation of the reader and author was realized
