Ukraine is shaken by internally and external conflicts - and not only recently, it reflected centuries -old ideological breaks and territorial displacements. The proposed study analyzes (meta-) literary concepts of Ukraine, based on Ukrainian and Russian-speaking prose 1991-2011. - The first decades of independence of the country. Against the background of national discourse, the heterogeneous representations of various regions and cities of Ukraine become places of literary exploration. In the center of interest is their participation in the Writing Culture, as well as the ethnographic modus as the main technique of the presentation of “Other” - the recording of the experienced spaces. It turns out that the adjacency of fictional Ukraine to European is connotent discourse reactivates the literary characteristics that contradict postmodern thinking: the subject declared dead returns back, “corrected” and “true” history, as well as the topography, which is known outside literature, becomes a prerequisite. Often, readers are involved in the process of spatial-cultural identification design.

The work underlying this book was adopted as a dissertation by the philosophy of the University of Zurich at the autumn semester 2012 at the request of the dissertation commission consisting of: prof. Dr. Sylvia Zasse (supervisor), prof. Dr. Suzanne Frank and prof. Dr. German Ritz
