The book proposed is a collection of eight lectures by the famous physicist A. A. Michelson, read by him at the Lawelovsky Institute (Massachusetts, USA) in 1899 and first published in printed form in these lectures prepared by Michelson After the invention of the interferometer, which made it possible to measure the length of the wave of the light, and conduct the famous experiment of Michelson -Morli, which subsequently became the most significant argument against the existence of ether, describes the phenomenon of interference, clarifies the principle of the interferometer, and examines the application of the interference method to astronomy. A separate lecture is devoted to the problem of ether, the existence of which, as an environment for the spread of light waves, Michelson does not confirm and does not deny.
Lectures are equipped with explanatory articles and notes of the honorary member of the USSR Academy of Sciences O. D. Kvolson. In the applications to the book, several articles are also given that revealing the scientific context in which the book was written, and its influence on the subsequent development of physics. In particular, examples of the multiple repetition of the Michelson -Morli experiment and the subsequent development of ideas about the broadcast.
The book will be useful to physicists and historians of science, interested in the development of physical ideas at the beginning of the XX century
