The shutter, along with a sundress, is a kind of symbol of the Russian traditional costume. The illustrated publication first illuminates in detail the history of this key object of men"s clothing in the peasant and urban environment from the 18th to the 20th century.
The research and illustrative base of the publication is the collection of the Russian Ethnographic Museum (St. Petersburg) The Russian Museum Foundation stores about five hundred male shirts, a significant part of which are rare ancient objects. The book also presents objects from the funds of the State Hermitage, Astrakhan, Bogorodsky, Mordovian, Nizhny Tagil, Smolensk and Tambov museums.
The main types of shirts are shown, their decorative design, the features of the cut, the materials from which they are made. Both peasant samples and stylized objects of the “Russian style” are presented.
The book contains a large practical section that includes the circuits and embroidery of three shirts (including on a separate sheet-lodge)
