The story of Viktor Nekrasov "in the trenches of Stalingrad" has become one of the brightest samples of the so -called "lieutenant" prose. The front -line soldier, an architect of education, who had not had a previously literary experience, Nekrasov managed to convey a personal feeling of war. This story is not so much about heroism and victory, although each of the characters can rightfully be called a hero as about inner fear, confusion, the habit of death, the ability to maintain humanity even where people are gone.
Vadim Rostovtsev engravings, clear and merciless, like sketches of a field correspondent, reflect the plot events and convey the author’s attitude to them
