At the end of the 19th century, European art turned its view to the east and became actively interested in the aesthetics of Japanese engraving. One of the first to collect the engravings of Ukiyo in Russia was Sergey Kitaev, a naval sailor and amateur artist. He managed to collect the largest in the country - and at one time it was believed that in Europe - a collection of Japanese art. A few years after the October Revolution of 1917, the collection fell into the State Museum of Emergency Arts named after A. S. Pushkin and was never completely studied or exhibited. The art critic Yevgeny Steiner in his book tells the history of this collection, immerses the reader in the historical and cultural context necessary for acquaintance with engravings, and as an illustration comments in detail by the selected sheets from the collection of Sergei Kitaev.
