For many centuries, powerful fortress walls, towers and bastions served the basis of the power and invincibility of states, and experts who knew how to build them were no less than the most talented commanders. The history of the fortification art of Europe and Russia from ancient times to the end of the 19th century is devoted to this book. Its author is Caesar Cui, a large military engineer, professor of several academies, who gave lectures even to the future emperor Nicholas II. Labor, which is classic in its field, has been published for the first time since 1897. The book describes in detail how the defensive structures and the methods of their attacks were gradually improved, what fortifications systems were created by outstanding European and Russian engineers. As examples, the device of many remarkable fortresses and forts is understood as examples.
