The origins, stages of the formation and activities of the unique higher educational institution-the Historical and Archival Institute of the Russian State University are investigated. The activities of the Historical and Archival Institute are shown “in persons”, with the involvement of a wide range of published and archival sources of the federal and Moscow archives, including the archive of the historical and archival institute, materials from the personal archives of the participants in the described events, the “folk archive” and the office of the Russian State Humanitarian University. The role of the institute in the scientific and educational landscape of Russia, as well as the contribution of scientists of MGIAI/IAI RSUSU to domestic science and culture, is shown.
