The book is dedicated to the Byzantine Hellenism of the IX century. In Byzantium, interest in ancient culture has sharply increased. At the origins of this revival stood the famous iconobian John the Grammar, and his nephew Leo philosopher raised the circle of students and followers, thanks to which a collection of manuscripts of Plato and Neoplatonikov was created. The Hellenistic humanism of this era, approaching Platonism and secularism, is most vividly reflected in the work of the Leo of the philosopher and his disciple Leo Hirosfakt. The Byzantine Hellenists were passionate about ancient culture, balancing on the edge beyond which, from the point of view of the pious Christian, wicked began.
The secular poetry of the nun of Cassia, in whose gnomic epigrams there are Hellenistic
Motives, is an example of more moderate Hellenism. The Patriarch of Constantinople Photius, despite the keen interest in ancient culture, looked at it from strictly Orthodox positions and in the spread of the ideal of enlightened Hellenism played a negative role. Especially interesting is the worldview of Leo Hyrospakte, in whose works not only neoplatonic, but also iconoclastic motifs sound. The creativity of the Hyrospakte is a kind of synthesis of Hellenism of the 9th century. And indicates the spread of Platonism and the survival of iconoclastic ideas among the educated Byzantines of that era
