What is a gender in an environment where gender identity has almost not been articulated? How did you reflect sexuality, bodily, marriage, birth and upbringing of children? In this book, the history of the Soviet art underground is first shown through the prism of gender research. With the help of this optics, art critic Olesya Avramenko builds new principles of comparative analysis of the works of Western and Soviet artists, starting with the process of forming in the USSR parallel culture, its existence during the time of stagnation and ending with its splitting during the years of perestroika. Particular attention in the monograph is given to the history of Soviet gender policy, its influence on society and art. The study of Avramenko is valuable not only with the depth of study of the problems, but also with a unique material-a series of interviews with participants in the artistic process and his eyewitnesses: Joseph Bakstein, Irina Nakhova, Vera Miturich-Khlebnikova, Andrei Monastorsky, George Kizwalter and others
