This book tells how construction technologies have become a powerful tool in the process of forming a new world and a new society. After the Second World War, the industrial production of prefabricated concrete panels fundamentally changed the appearance and vector of the development of modern cities. Manual labor was replaced by automated serial production, and concrete elements began to be used to build billions of square meters of housing across the planet. Before turning into what many today consider the dull face of our cities, a new panel development, as well as the process of quickly erecting buildings, performed a staggering effect. The image of a concrete panel soaring in the sky was reflected in all types of media and in popular culture: from painting, photographs, opera and cinema to posters, cartoons, children"s toys.
The Flying Panels project unites architects, historians, philosophers and curators, thinking about the cultural meaning of this phenomenon, from the second half of the 20th century up to the present day. The publication is accompanied by the exhibition "flying panels" (October 18, 2019 - March 1, 2020), which was the curator of Pedro Ignasio Alonso and Palmarola. The book also included the articles of Michael Abrahamson, Himena Castillo, Adrian Forty, Boris Groys, Maria Lind, Jennifer Mack, Philip Moyzer, Natalia Solopova, Eric Shtenberg and Christina Varga-Harris.
