Like a military ship or a line of extracted infantry, a new secular and "regular" school became a symbol of the Petrine reign. It is generally accepted that educational innovations became the result of the personal efforts of Peter himself and reflected the objective needs of the state in personnel for the new bureaucracy and the regular army. The monograph by Igor Fedyukin, however, reveals the key role of various "spotlights" in the emergence of new schools in Russia of the first half of the 18th century. The author shows how the emergence and development of schools reflected the efforts of "administrative entrepreneurs" who sought to promote their career, expand the client network, strengthen court positions or implement their ideological agenda. It was from such individual "spotlights" that the facade of the Petrovsky "regular" state developed. Igor Fedyukin - Director of the Center for the History of Russia of the New Time of the Higher School of Economics
