This book is the main work of the German philologist Ernst Robert Kurzius (1886–1956): a book that influenced a number of philological disciplines (including literary criticism and Central Middle Power) and received international recognition soon after the first publication (1948) Curcius demonstrates a fundamentally new approach to the question of the history of European literature and leads its constants from late -ant rhetorical practices, the book introduces the concept of the “Latin Middle Ages” as a point of gravity of the All -European literary continuity and developed the doctrine of topos as “storage storages”, on the example of which it is possible To objectify and specify the concept of humanitarian tradition.
The Book of the Curcius, in which positivism is combined with intuitivism, and the depth of presentation is clarified by the style of style - this is both an encyclopedic reference book on historical topics, an important document of a difficult era, and a personal statement about the issues of humanism and Europeanism. This publication first presents a Russian translation of this famous book, made according to the second edition, supplemented and revised (1953), equipped with a detailed scientific apparatus (this is the first commented publication of “European literature and the Latin Middle Ages”): the book is included in the historical context, and a general picture is presented its genesis and reception.
The first volume includes the main part of the book (18 chapters with the author’s introduction), as well as the preface by S. L. Kozlov to the Russian publication.
The second volume included “Excursions”, comments of the translator of the book by D. S. Kolchigin, “Chronology of the life and work of Ernst Robert Courcius” and pointers to both volumes of the book.
