The attention of readers is proposed to the book of the famous Russian literary critic and the historian of literature A.M. Kabichevsky (1838-1911), containing essays on the history of Russian censorship from the beginning of the XVIII to the middle of the 19th century. The author discusses a significant difference in the development of printing in the West and Russia, about the indifference of Russian society in this matter and, as a result, the absence of laws and the accident of all censorship measures up to Peter the Great. The development of censorship policy in Russia has been traced from the time of the reign of Elizabeth Petrovna to the era of Alexander II. The influence of certain political events on the strengthening or weakening of censorship is considered, the activities of various commissions and committees on printing, as well as spiritual censorship bodies are highlighted.
