The book summarizes the author’s long -term research in the field of French mass literature. Separate genres of mass prose (Gothic romance, socio-vague romance, raincoat and swords, detective) and the general trends of the evolution of the corresponding literary products from romanticism to "beautiful era" are considered. In the coverage of the work of large writers (Eugene Su, Alexander Dumas-father, Jules Verne), the author of the book focuses on the not most developed aspects of their literary heritage. Turning to the less famous representatives of mass literature, K. A. Chekalov resorts to the genre of a traditional literary and biographical essay. Of particular importance for the popular literature of the second half of the XIX century as a whole was the cycle of novels about the Rockbole P. A. Ponson Du Terrail. Two separate essays are devoted to this writer in the book. Much attention in the book of K. A. Chekalov is given the reception of the French popular novel in Russia.
The book will be useful to historians of French literature, sociologists, culturalists, book scholars and theorists of literature
