The new book of the famous St. Petersburg scientist, archaeologist and theorist of archeology, Lev Samuilovich Klein is devoted to the concept of culture, which, within the framework of archeology, is rather a working concept, rarely subjected to reflection.
Nevertheless, the theoretical interests of the author of this book have always been wider than any disciplinary framework: in addition to archeology, his works in the field of cultural anthropology, classical philology, ethnogenesis, linguistics and the general theory of culture are known.
The first part of the book is devoted to the definition of the concept of "culture" and the accompanying polemic in various schools and branches of humanitarian knowledge.
The second part sets out the communication theory of the evolution of culture, which the author considers his most interesting contribution to anthropology. L.S. Klein justifies his hypothesis that the transfer of culture from generation to generation can be described as a network of communication, but stretched not in space, but in time.
In this capacity, the same factors that operate in any communication network (radio, telephone, etc) should affect the translating of culture and information. The normal passage of information is ensured by the necessary repeatability and a sufficient number of communication channels with the permissible throughput. The most interesting thing to understand is the correspondence of the phenomena of culture to the physical factors of the matrix of the transmission of information that promotes or prevents the passage of signals
