Crime and Punishment

“Crime and punishment” (1866) Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881) is a socio-psychological romance with a pronounced philosophical subtext. The critic and publicist Vasily Rozanov wrote: “Crime and punishment” is the most finished in his form and the deep in content the work of Dostoevsky, in which he expressed his view on the nature of man, his appointment and laws, to which he is subordinated as a person ... ” The hero of the novel is Rodion Raskolnikov - a student who is “crushed by poverty”. He succumbed to the ideas popular at that time that all people are divided into “creatures of trembling” and “Napoleons”. So he decides to kill the evil and greedy old woman-percentress in order to change his fate at once and correct the position of his family. Philosophy comes into conflict with the conscience and spiritual state of the hero: he is not able to cope with the serious burden of the crime
