The Polish and French historian Krzysztof Roman (b. 1934) devoted his long -term creative activity to the study of the concepts of memory and history in which the meanings of certain objects have always played a leading role. This book, compiled from the essays of the 1970-1980s, was first published in France in 1987 and immediately became fundamental to study the history of collecting, setting the actual and theoretical framework in which several subsequent generations of scientists have been working. Lemyan does not recognize the borders accepted today between the collection of works of “elegant arts” on the one hand and other objects - on the other, drawing the overall picture of European collecting from the 16th to the XVIII century. He demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of the history of collecting, inextricably intertwined not only with the history of art, science, society and politicians, but also with anthropology, sociology and issues of value and significance in the context of various economic and social structures.
