The first posthumous collected works of M.L. Gasparova (in six volumes) sets his task to fully convey the versatility of his scientific interests and present the main directions of his activity. In all the works of Gasparov there are strictness, brought up by the tradition of classical philology, the accuracy necessary for the poetry, and the courage of appeal to a variety of directions of science. The articles and monographs of Gasparov, dedicated to Russian poetry, are based on the huge material of his poetic research, which have long become classical. The work collected in this volume includes historical reviews of various stages of Russian poetry, characteristics and biographical certificates of famous and forgotten poets, interpretation and analysis of individual poems, examples of the innovative commentary to the lyrics of O. Mandelstam and B. Pasternak. The monograph “Meter and meaning” is devoted to the connection of a poetic meter and content, a phenomenon, which is called a semantics of a meter or a semantic halo of meter. In this book, on the huge material of Russian poetic texts of the XIX - XX centuries, the work of the most important poetic language is shown, the laws of the literary tradition and the evolution of the poetic system are demonstrated. The book “Meter and meaning” has a new step in the development of science about verses and verse, as the scientist of his research himself designated. Some of the works placed in volume are extracted from low -trip publications and have still been inaccessible to most readers. Proceedings of M.L. Gasparova about Russian poetry, with all their genre diversity, develops into a holistic, systemic and voluminous picture thanks to the unity of the thought and style of this outstanding Russian philologist in the second half of the twentieth century
