At the beginning of the 19th century, educational institutions for the deaf already existed in the Russian Empire. This is the St. Petersburg School of Deaf-Member, founded in 1806. In Warsaw, since 1817 there was an institute for the deaf and blind. Until 1832, the deaf could get an education at the Vilnius Institute of Deafension. And in Odessa in 1843 a private school was created for deaf girls.
In 1900, on the initiative of the Empress, Empress Maria Fedorovna, the "provision of the truste of the Sovereign Maria Fedorovna of the deaf -mute was approved. Empress Maria Fedorovna, the wife of Emperor Alexander the Third and mother of the last Russian emperor Nicholas the Second, throughout her life, was actively engaged in charitable activities and left a noticeable mark in the history of the trusteeship of the Deaf.
And at the beginning of the 20th century, the first charitable societies in Moscow appear in the Russian Empire in support of the deaf. The most fruitful of them were the Moscow Department of Board of Trustees of the Empress Maria Fedorovna about the deaf and the Moscow Society of the Deaf -Member named after I.K. Arnold, and currently in Moscow, the oldest public organization under the name of the Moscow City Organization of the All -Russian Society of the Deaf "continues to exist in Moscow.

The history of charitable activities in favor of the deaf Muscovites confirmed its high authority and significance in Russian society. The philanthropists were awarded the golden and silver icons of the trusteeship of the Empress Empress Maria Fedorovna about the deaf -mute, noted them with honorary titles - an honorary member.
Charity itself as a form of social activity among merchants and nobles for the benefit of others was already a cultural tradition in Moscow.
The activities of charitable societies in support of the deaf were a vivid progressive phenomenon in the history of pre -revolutionary Moscow. The study of this sphere of charitable activity is necessary in order to pay tribute to philanthropists, representatives of various classes of the Russian Empire.
The chronological framework of our study is limited by the pre-revolutionary period (1831-1917), that is, from the moment the first educational institution was formed for the deaf A. Korsi in Moscow. In this work, we tried to list all charity, guardians and educational institutions for the deaf that existed in pre -revolutionary Moscow, as well as give information about their activities. A great research work was done in Moscow State Archives and Libraries to identify the existence and activities of these institutions.
