The book of the English art historian Herbert Reed "Brief History of Modern Sculpture" (1964), conceived as a paired volume to his "Brief History of Modern Painting" (1959), is first published in Russian. After half a century, it has not lost its relevance and is still considered a classic of art history. The material of the book covers the stormy and contradictory period of the development of contemporary art from the end of the XIX to the beginning of the 60s of the twentieth century. The keyword in its name - "Modern" - determined the choice of the author: he builds a number of sculptors - from Rodin to Cesar, in the work of which there was a decisive gap with classical tradition, and analyzes their work that meets the spirit of the new time.
