The study of the art historian Katarina Lopatkina describes and partly reconstructs the system of Soviet international art contacts of the 1920-1950s, demonstrating a wide range of multidirectional forces that came into effect each time when the "alien" elements of Western culture penetrated the Soviet culture field. The study based on archival materials for the first time in domestic historiography examines in detail a number of typological plots of existence (exchange, the creation of specialized space, exhibition, gift) of Western modernist art in the space of the socialist canon
