In the art of recent decades, the installation has acquired the significance of the leading art form. However, as Claire Bishop notes, the “broadest range of differences in the appearance, content and scale of the works created today under this name, as well as freedom in the use of this term make it almost devoid of any specific meaning.” The task of this book is to streamline this seemingly boundless material in its heterogeneity. Based on the analysis of specific works, the author shows that since the perception of such art requires the physical presence of the public within the work, it can be classified by the type of experience that it offers the viewer. Bishop trains the origins of the installation in the artistic vanguard of the 1920s, pays close attention to the neo-Avangard of the 1960-1970s and considers the artistic practice of the late XX-early XXI centuries, while clarifying the conceptual foundations of the art of installation
