The State Academy of Art Sciences (Gakhn) - a unique scientific and cultural institution that arose at the junction of the Silver Age and "Avangard" - represents one of the brightest, although still insufficiently studied pages of the history of Russian humanitarian science of the twentieth century. The Academy was founded in 1921 in Moscow as a "Higher Research Institution, aimed at a comprehensive study of all types of arts and artistic culture." Over the incomplete ten years of its existence, it has developed into the largest research center, the program of which has become a new definition of art sciences and the synthesis of aesthetic theory with artistic experience. Artists and art historians, literary critics and philosophers, music figures and theater took part in the creation and development of the Academy. The first volume of this publication presents a systematic analysis of the main directions of the theory of art, which was developed by the leading scientists of the philosophical department of Gakhn (A.G. Gabrichevsky, G.G. Shpet, S.L. Frank, A.F. Losev, A.A. Sidorov and many others) Particular attention is paid to Russian-German scientific relations, thanks to which the activities of the Academy are a significant phenomenon of not only Russian, but also European humanitarian science of the twentieth century.
The second volume contains archival materials. They demonstrate the entire range of theoretical discussions in gahn dedicated to the science of art, and include texts of reports, abstracts and protocols of debate, are published for the first time
