The real book, written by one of the founders of the Soviet school in the history of mathematics M. Ya. Vygodsky, is devoted to the history of elementary mathematics. The book is based on the desire to introduce the reader to the actual material by primary sources. A coherent presentation of the material is given, striving to give, if possible, a whole picture of the history of arithmetic and algebra in the ancient world (Egypt, Babylon, Greece), to find out the circumstances and causes of various methods of account and methods for solving problems.
