The new periodic annual edition of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Architectural Archeology" began with the publication of the materials of the conference "Church of the Annunciation on the settlement: historical and cultural context", which took place on February 14-15, 2018. The conference and the collection completed the works of the Novgorod architectural and archaeological detachment of the IA RAS 2016-2017 on archaeological disclosure, research and preparation for the museum of the key monument of Novgorod architecture of the XII century, preserved underground.
The collection draws a line under the second stage of studying the monument. The beginning of the first stage was laid back in the 1930s by the Leningrad researcher M.K. Carger and continued by him in the 1960s. The second stage of research by the Annunciation Church under the leadership of Vl. V. Sedova began in the early 2000s and ended in 2017. The large-scale works of 2016-2017 actualized scientific interest in the temple, its artistic environment and the era in general. The first results of these studies are reflected in this collection.
The publication includes articles directly related to excavations on the settlement, with the material culture of the medieval settlement as a whole and with the restoration and study of the Annunciation Church. The release is completed by a series of articles in which the monument is placed in historical, cultural and art history contexts, as well as works dedicated to the temple of the Annunciation of the XIV century
