The concept of austerity, that is, the desire for abstinence and renunciation of earthly goods, is a key for self -awareness of Russian culture. It is associated with the topic of poverty, which is understood not only the need, but also the poverty of the environment, the asceticism of nature itself. Thinkers such as N. Berdyaev, M. Weber and N. Elias, described the austerity as the technique of self -restraint and self -discipline and, therefore, as a key economic and civilizational factor.
