A.I. Herzen - an exemplary Russian thinker, a politician, was also a subtle artistic critic who knew how to give capacious characteristics to whole cultural eras. Herzen taught the Russian intelligentsia of the scale of vision of problems and the paradoxical wit of solving their solution, a deeply personal experience of art, the strategic understanding of the tasks facing Russian culture, and finally, the confidential tone of the conversation about any objects. A nicer longing for the best world, balanced and at the same time passion of judgments, moral indignation - all this makes the aesthetic and critical prose of Herzen important today.
