The book of the Russian historian T.L. Musatova sheds light on many so far moments of life and work of N.V. Gogol during his European trips of 1843-1848. The author managed to collect and summarize a whole array of truly unique documentary sources from the Moscow and Vatican funds.
The new, first recovered, biographical archival material, as well as the correspondence of the Italian and Russian nobility, allowed to take a fresh look at many aspects of the Gogol biography, penetrate the secrets of creative ideas and spiritual and moral searches of the writer, and recreate his connections with worlds of artistic bohemia, literary salons and even diplomacy. Over the past 150 years, an overview of the world Gogolian, which opens the monograph, will serve as a guideline for the development of the achievements of foreign and Russian gogoedia.
Particular attention is paid to the influence of the Western and Eastern (Byzantine) literary tradition on the late "of Gogol, the formation of the writer as a harbinger of the socio-Orthodox direction of Russian literature
