In the process of integrating Russia into European culture in the XVIII century, German architects and masters played a prominent role, who, after the foundation of St. Petersburg, along with Swiss, Italians, French, Dutch, contributed to the creation of a new European appearance of Russian architecture and art. In all areas, whether architecture, sculpture, painting, engraving, etc., German masters left a memory of themselves. The works created by them became an integral part of Russian culture. A detailed consideration of biographies and activities of each of them in St. Petersburg is the content of this book, the first filed in the history of European art historical. The author sought not to be limited to a simple enumeration of the work performed, but tried on the basis of documents to show, in what conditions the German architects and the masters lived and worked. Very significant was the role of Germany for St. Petersburg in the field of collecting painting. The basis of the art gallery, now the world-famous Hermitage, was acquired in 1764 a collection of Berlin merchant I.E. Gotskovsky, following which, four years later, a famous Collection of Graph G. Brunel was bought in Dresden. In the XVIII century, the territory of the dissemination of the German language covered not only numerous dukes, principalities and counties in the territory of modern Germany, but also a significant part of the state, known as the Sacred Roman Empire, with the capital in Vienna. Therefore, the name of the monograph is largely conditionally and implies all territories whose language of whose population was German
