The proposed publication is devoted to one of the issue of little studied in humanitarian science - collective identity in its civilizational forms. The emphasis has been placed on the characterization of different manifestations of collective identity - from group, subcultural and ethnic to civilizational. For the first time, an attempt is made to apply a functional approach to art in its attitude to civilization. The experience of analyzing art within borders such as civilization (Russia) is proposed. The specific functions of art associated with the formation and maintenance of collective identity and with its ability to overcome its possible crises are revealed in large durations of history. Attention is drawn to the fact that the ideological period in Russian history is only one of the periods in the long history of Russian civilization and, accordingly, civilizational identity. By virtue of this, the history of art in its ideologized version is subjected to radical rethinking, in connection with which the emphasis on identifying the latent functions of the 20th century, associated with alternative forms of collective identity, is made.
